Barclays has announced the appointment of Ian Workman to the role of managing director, strengthening its South East business and corporate banking team.
Workman will lead a team of 400 relationship managers and directors across the region responsible for Barclays business and corporate customers and clients, from start-ups to FTSE 250 companies, as part of Barclays' new commitment to support UK scale-ups and their founders. The new proposition, Barclays High Growth and Entrepreneurs, is in direct response to the Britain’s scale up gap, and will help the UK compete on the global stage.
Workman has been with Barclays for 26 years having started his career as a new entrant in a small branch in West Wales and then worked across the UK in a variety of relationship and leadership roles. His leadership and corporate banking experience will continue to add value to Barclays’ customers, clients and their businesses.
Commenting on his new role, he said: “Barclays has a strong track record of supporting scale-up businesses and is uniquely placed to help and support ambitious businesses and their founders at all stages of growth, particularly during scale up but also at IPO and exit stage. No other UK institution can offer this end-to-end support and through our newly-created relationship team we are providing access to a range of innovative funding, services and networks for the most ambitious businesses driving economic growth.”
Gavin Isle, co-head for Barclays Corporate Banking, UK, said: “Ian’s new appointment to managing director will bring an added dimension to our business across the region and greatly enhance our client proposition. We believe the industry needs to do more to support the £1 billion+ companies of tomorrow. We are leading the way by building a dedicated support programme for high-growth firms and Ian’s role will help support us in that ambition.”
Outside of work Workman enjoys spending time with his wife and four children as well as undertaking voluntary work for local charities.
