Shoosmiths has been ranked first in the South East for volume of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions.

The legal firm was ranked first place in the South East and third place in London in 2021 for the second year running in the latest Experian MarketIQ report results.

Nationally, the firm rose to second place for total volume of M&A transactions.

The Experian report highlighted 2021 as one of the global M&A market’s best ever years, driven by sustained access to capital and consistently low interest rates which both fuelled a surge in deal making.

This was a result of a particular busy quarter at the beginning of 2021, with businesses pushing forward with transactions that had previously been put on hold when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Stephen Porter, head of the Shoosmiths corporate division, said: “It is a testament to the hard work and expertise of our teams to be ranked second for M&A deal volume within the UK. We see activity levels only rising and confidence remains high as we head into 2022 – following a strong start to the year so far.”

Shoosmiths corporate team also saw significant people growth across its offices, on a national level, with new joiners across all transaction teams including corporate, banking and finance, restructuring and advisory and tax.
