Leading construction firm the Lakesmere Group was officially presented with its Queen’s Award for Enterprise from Her Majesty’s lord-lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson Esquire, at a special ceremony held on October 5 at the company’s Winchester head office.

Queen’s Award winners were notified in April, with the successful companies going on to attend an exclusive reception presided over by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace in July.

Lakesmere received its award for excellence in international trade in recognition of its successful business performance in the overseas construction market, resulting in exports rising as a percentage of turnover from 1% to 30%.

Along with the lord-lieutenant the event was attended by the mayor of Winchester, councillor Angela Clear; the chairman of Hampshire County Council, councillor Jonathan Glen; the deputy lieutenant, Andrew Kent Esquire; and special guests from the local business community.

Prior to the presentation, members of the party were invited to meet with the Lakesmere team to find out more about the work the company is doing both here in the UK and overseas before going on to take a guided tour of Lakesmere’s new metal manufacturing facility.

Commenting on the event, Matt Nicholson, managing director for the south region, said: “It has been a real honour to officially receive our Queen’s Award from the lord-lieutenant of Hampshire and we are really appreciative that so many members of the local community have joined us here today to share in our success. Lakesmere is proud to be flying the flag for UK companies overseas; this very special award recognises and celebrates the talents, expertise and loyalty of the people behind the company and has helped to raise the profile of both the construction sector and local manufacturing industry here in Winchester.”

The formal presentation of Lakesmere’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise comes just months after the company posted its most successful financial results to date. In the period ending January 2015, Group turnover has grown to £95.6 million, an increase of 11% from the 2014 figure of £86m, with profits before tax up 23% from £1.99m to £2.44m. The company is on course to build on this strong performance, with turnover expected to exceed £100m this year and circa £130m in 2017.
