The Wight Shipyard has been formally presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade at a time when business is growing rapidly. Peter Morton, Chief Executive, said: “We have the strongest pipeline of work since inception, and things look set to go from strength to strength.”
The yard recently signed an order for two high-speed ferries and two 24-metre aluminium explorer vessels. It is also building a hybrid wind farm support vessel.
Morton added:
“We have a bright future operating at the cutting edge of aluminium construction and carbon reduction. The skills we are fostering mean that we can compete on the international stage as well as domestically and we very much hope that this award will propel our case for building the new Border Force vessels.”
The East Cowes-based company has been active in stemming orders lost to overseas yards and capitalising on local skills on the Isle of Wight. It aims to use island suppliers wherever it can and supports over 100 local companies. Wight Shipyard is ranked 238th in The Business Magazine's 2021 edition of the Solent 250 listing.
