Sussex craft brewery ships ales over to Scandinavia

Scandinavian drinkers are about to be treated to beers from the Sussex weald as local craft brewery Three Acre Brewery has made its first foray into an emerging export market.

The brewery, based near Heathfield, has sent 37 barrels of traditional English cask-conditioned ale over to Sweden, including Best Bitter, Spring Golden and IPA brews- destined for more than 20 outlets.

"Live" cask-conditioned beer is relatively unknown outside the UK and there are very few other countries that drink real ale.

"Part of this is down to a lack of knowledge about the product overseas which can make it harder to keep properly and serve well," explained Three Acre’s marketing director Chester Broad.

"It is exciting to witness cask ale gaining momentum in this export market and, who knows, perhaps real ale could snowball into something much bigger on the Continent?"

The ales are destined for five venues in Stockholm, including the Akkurat restaurant in the Södermalm district, the English pub The Churchill Arms and the Old Brewer pub in the city.

They will also be available at three outlets in the university city of Uppsala as well as in the far reaches of northern and south-western Sweden as well as the southern city of Gothenburg.

"We already have a great working relationship with the distributor and hope that this will be the start of a wider spread into the region," added Broad.

Three Acre has also unveiled a summertime special beer - the tropical fruit-influenced Pineapple Dream.
