Portsmouth: Revealed as the top UK city for securing a pay rise this summer
If you’re living in Portsmouth and are looking to secure a new job this summer, then now is definitely the right time to go looking.
In fact, new data from the UK’s leading independent job board, CV-Library, reveals that average pay for new roles in the city jumped up by an impressive 9.5% in the second quarter of 2019.
What’s more, the findings, which compared job market data from Q2 2019 with the same period last year, found that Portsmouth experienced above average pay growth, with salaries rising by a smaller 4.6% across the UK as a whole. This means the city is one of the top locations for securing a pay rise in this summer:
- Portsmouth (pay up 9.5%)
- Edinburgh (pay up 9%)
- Newcastle (pay up 8.5%)
- London (pay up 8.3%)
- Leeds (pay up 7.9%)
- Nottingham (pay up 7.5%)
- Hull (pay up 7.3%)
- Liverpool (pay up 6.3%)
- Southampton (pay up 5.8%)
- Leicester (pay up 5.7%)
In real terms, pay has jumped up from £31,689 per annum in Q2 2018, to £34,728 per annum in Q2 2019; meaning an extra £3,039 in the pockets of workers. The average salary in the UK currently sits at £34,741 per year.
Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library commented on the findings: “Money isn’t everything when it comes to job satisfaction, but if you’re keen to earn a higher wage then moving jobs could well be your best bet. This is because businesses are desperately trying to attract more people to their roles and have no choice but to push up their pay packets in order to do so.”
Alongside this, the data suggests that there’s more competition for these roles, as application rates jumped up by 8% in Q2 2019. At the same time, the amount of jobs in Portsmouth grew by a strong 9.4%.
Biggins continued: “Our data suggests that professionals have been busy applying for more jobs and this could certainly be down to the jump in salaries. While this is great news for employers, if you’re one of the people that wants to find a new job, it just means that there’s potentially more competition from other candidates right now. So, consider what you can do to stand out from the crowd.”
