Following their declaration of a nature emergency, Portsmouth City Council are asking residents for input into a new tree planting project.

The nature emergency motion was brought to and passed by the full city council last week.

In response Portsmouth residents are now being asked where they would like to see more trees planted. The consulation comes after funding was secured from the charity Trees for Cities.

That funding will assist in the cost of planting new trees, shrubberies, hedges and plants.

Council’s climate change and green recovery boss, Councillor Kimberly Barrett, said: "There has been a significant decrease in biodiversity, which is why projects such as greening are so important.

"The money that we got from Trees for Cities will be used in the next planting season, towards the end of the year. This gives us plenty of time to get suggestions from residents and schools about where would benefit from more greenery.

"We will also be taking part in the Queen’s Green Canopy for the jubilee and working with various community groups to plant more trees."
