BAE Systems Maritime Services is working together with the Williams Formula One team to inspire Portsmouth Naval Base staff in energy efficiency at an environmental event taking place this week.

Employees at Portsmouth Naval Base will attend the THINK Environment Event on Thursday July 24 where a WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING Formula One car will be positioned alongside a Pacific 24 Small Boat, which both incorporate similar manufacturing technologies. There will also be stands from the local community including Portsmouth City Council, Solent Green Deal and Veolia, a waste management company. The stalls will offer advice and guidance on how to be more energy efficient and encourage staff to think about their safety, health and the environment.

Focusing on energy efficiency for the future, the combined technologies of BAE Systems Maritime Services and Williams Advanced Engineering, the technology and engineering services business of the Williams Group, could be applied to Portsmouth Naval Base to reduce energy. Fuel savings and reduced generator hours have already been demonstrated on the naval base and, in readiness for the arrival of the QEC Carrier into Portsmouth, energy efficiency upgrades are already taking place.

James Davis, Naval Base Services director for BAE Systems Maritime Services, said: “Safety, health and environment are at the forefront of everything we do at BAE Systems. This event highlights our number one focus by encouraging our employees to engage with ways to improve our energy efficiency and see the potential we have to integrate the technologies of Maritime Services and Williams and apply them to future projects within our business.”

Speaking about Williams’ involvement in the THINK campaign with BAE Systems, Mike O’Driscoll, Group CEO, said: “Williams has a growing advanced engineering division to compliment our established Formula One team. Its purpose is to use our Formula One capability, skills and know-how to develop energy efficient solutions that can help tackle some of society’s biggest concerns. We have a growing relationship with BAE Systems and the THINK campaign - with its emphasis on energy efficient technologies - is closely aligned with our own work. This event is a great way of using the global appeal of Formula One to promote the campaign and highlight its synergies with the sport.”

With battery technology at their core, the combined technologies of BAE Systems Maritime Services and Williams Advanced Engineering can work together in the future to reduce fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, waste and travel.
