Police investigate cyber attack on Wightlink Ferry co.

A criminal investigation has been launched into a cyber attack on the IT systems of cross Solent ferry company Wightlink.

The ferry company are currently in the process of contacting affected customers whose; “names, addresses, bank details and signatures were compromised.”

Wightlink became aware of the incident on February 7 and immediately contacted police.

The South East Regional Organised Crime Unit are now investigating the IT breach. The Information Commissioners Office have also been notified of the breach, during which unauthorised access to customer data was made.

Wightlink Chief Executive, Keith Greenfield, told media: “This was a highly sophisticated criminal attack on an essential service. I would like to thank all my colleagues at Wightlink who responded quickly ensuring that the impact to customers was minimised and that cross-Solent travel and bookings were unaffected.

“Wightlink will be making no further comment at this stage as the matter is an ongoing criminal investigation.”
