Cliveden House, at Taplow, near Maidenhead, has been voted one of the top country hotels in Europe, and the best in the UK by the discerning readership of the US-based publication – Travel & Leisure - in its 2013 World’s Best Hotels survey.

At sixth place, receiving a score of 89.33, Cliveden was the highest ranking UK property, ahead of ninth place Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons who scored 88.27. Six luxury properties in France were listed in the top 10, including the Domaine Les Crayères, in Reims in first place with 93.24, the Hôtel Crillon le Brave was second with 90.53 and the Oustau de Baumanière was third with a score of 90.

Now in its 18th year the Travel & Leisure ‘World’s Best Hotels’ survey was described as being one of its most robust lists to date, readers were asked to cast their votes for the hotels, destinations and companies that define the very best in travel worldwide.

Particular mention was made by the judges of the history and heritage of Cliveden House, its National Trust grounds and the impressive list of owners this grand Italianate mansion has had over the centuries; it has been home to three Dukes, an Earl, a Prince of Wales and the Viscounts Astor.

Commenting on the award, Andrew Stembridge, managing director of Cliveden House, and its sister property Chewton Glen, said: “We are thrilled once again to have been included in this prestigious list and to have improved on our previous ranking. This award recognises the hard work and dedication of General Manager Sue Williams, and her team in ensuring that our guests receive the best service and hospitality when staying at Cliveden House.

Cliveden is a remarkable property, one that since we took over ownership in February 2012 is flourishing in safe hands once again. Plans are being finalised to further improve the property and enhance our guests’ experience of this fabulous hotel. Last year saw the refurbishment of Spring Cottage, an enchanting hideaway on the banks of the River Thames; together with a number of bedrooms, meeting rooms and leisure facilities within the main house. This year also saw Cliveden becoming a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux collection of 500 hotels worldwide, in fact the closest Relais property to London.”
