Leonardo Aerospace Southampton to benefit from £41m MoD contract

Leonardo Aerospace, who base major parts of their UK operations in Southampton, have been awarded a £41 million contract by the Military of Defence to supply digital bomb disposal protection.

The new technology is capable of scanning the airwaves for remote detonation signals, allowing skilled Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel to block them, averting the threat.

The £41 million contract has created 10 jobs across the country and supported 100 more, including 35 at Leonardo’s Southampton and Basildon bases. Around 50 per cent of the value of the contract will be delivered by small and medium-sized enterprises across the UK.

The contract will see the British Army’s 11 EOD teams, Search Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps and the Royal Navy Diving Fleet Squadron provided with vehicle-mounted and portable systems.

Minister for Defence Procurement, Jeremy Quin, said: “Our personnel work in hostile environments on dangerous tasks to keep our nation and its people safe. This multi-million-pound contract with Team Endure not only delivers crucial innovative protection for our Armed Forces but is in large part being delivered by UK SMEs.”
