Isle of Wight: BDO supports sustainable strategy

Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP has joined forces with Eco Island – the Isle of Wight’s sustainable community strategy, in a new initiative.

BDO has become a founding-partner in the ambitious change programme, which is looking to turn the Isle of Wight into the ultimate Eco Island, by strengthening communities and significantly lowering the carbon footprint in England by 2020.

Eco Island is a broad-based strategy designed to improve the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the Island, building stronger, healthier communities and giving local people enhanced opportunities.

The initiative grew out of public opinion from residents, who want to tackle issues surrounding sustainability. The environment and its importance are the Isle of Wight’s top selling points, with thousands of tourists attracted to the area each year to enjoy its scenic coastline and picturesque countryside.

However, Eco Island is keen that, when issues of sustainability are being considered, local communities are kept prosperous through business and investment. BDO will help Eco Island create and fund businesses that will provide local employment, opportunities for training, and green-energy while ultimately helping to relieve fuel poverty for island residents.

Stuart Lisle, BDO Southampton tax partner said: “We are providing innovative advice and funding solutions to support the Island Strategic Partnership in meeting the objectives of the Eco Island project.

"Through enabling island businesses to work closely with other UK businesses, who have already developed sustainable technologies, and by bringing those with new business ideas together with commercial funders, we hope to play an important role in supporting the programme in order to help to realise the Eco Island vision.”

Involvement is being led by BDO’s Southampton office utilising the skills and knowledge of the firm’s specialist renewable sector team. BDO are committed to exceeding market expectations across all sustainability issues. The firm is keen to lower their overall carbon footprint, by encouraging positive attitudes within their practice and staff. This approach mirrors that of Eco Island’s, ensuring a successful and proactive partnership.
