Dorset sees record number of new startups in 2023
More companies were formed in Dorset during 2023 than ever before in the county with 8,565 new start-ups registered, according to the Inform Direct Review of Company Formations using data from Companies House and the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The picture mirrored the one across the whole of the UK, which also saw the highest ever number of new companies established.

In Dorset, there were 8,565 new formations during the last 12 months compared to 8,427 in 2022, bringing the number of registered companies in the county to an all-time high of 63,266. To see a more detailed picture, click HERE.
Across the UK, 900,006 new companies were registered versus 805,141 in 2022 - an increase of 11.8%. The total number of UK companies now stands at a record 5,476,772.
"It is excellent news that Dorset can celebrate a record year for new company formations during 2023," said John Korchak, managing director at Inform Direct.
"The year undoubtedly presented a range of challenges for business including tepid predictions of economic growth, volatility in energy prices and uncertainty from world events.
"However, the formation figures demonstrate very clearly that Dorset entrepreneurs remained undeterred and pursued their ambitions to establish new ventures.
"This positive picture is mirrored in the overall position for the UK which saw the highest ever number of new companies established during 2023. The total number of UK formations exceeded 900,000 for the very first time," he added.
Across Dorset, Bournemouth saw the highest number of new businesses formed at 2,399, which was followed by Purbeck at 1,896 and Poole with 1,458.
1,004 new firms were formed in east Dorset, with 834 in west Dorset and 346 in north Dorset.
Meanwhile, dissolutions of UK companies totalled 662,915, an increase on the 578,679 companies, which were dissolved in 2022.
Inform Direct's secretarial and formations software currently supports 350,000 UK companies.
