The MP for Cheltenham, Alex Chalk, has been appointed Solicitor General.

Alex Chalk MP said: “I am delighted to be appointed as Solicitor General for England and Wales. I am looking forward to working with the Attorney General, Suella Braverman, to help build back better and safer from the pandemic and to continue the Government’s work in rebuilding confidence and trust in our criminal justice system.

“It is an honour to be joining this unique and historic government department which occupies a vital place at the heart of the UK constitution.”

Alex Chalk was elected as Member of Parliament for Cheltenham on 7 May 2015 and re-elected in 2017 and 2019.  His previous role in government was as Prisons and Probation Minister.

Before his election Alex had fourteen years' experience as a barrister specialising in counter-terrorism, homicide and serious fraud cases. He appeared in many high profile cases which were widely reported in the media.

Thanks to Alex’s campaigning, the town has won a series of major investments, arguably the most impactful of those in the coming years is likely to be the £23million to develop Cheltenham as a national cyber centre; a vision first set out by Alex in 2014.
