Brexit casts shadow over 30-year celebrations
A Warwick business owner claims the uncertainty of Brexit is casting a cloud over his company's impending 30th anniversary celebrations,
Adventure Sports grew from humble beginnings back in 1990 and today realises a lifetime ambition for its founder Steve Richardson, from Leek Wootton.
The outdoor activity centre was established at a 100-acre site at Wedgnock Rifle Rangeby Steve, who was already running paintball and clay shooting on neighbouring land that he was farming.
Since then the number of activities have grown to more than 50 including karting, clay shooting, quad bike and axe throwing, hovercraft, 4x4 taster sessions and as well as a wide selection of team-building activities.
Steve said: “Thirty years ago I had been looking at ways of diversifying from farming and when I saw the rifle range land had gone up for sale I quickly realised that it was the ideal venue for me to expand my business. I had already been running Paintball for three years – it was the first paintball site in the Midlands actually. Then I introduced clay pigeon shooting and it grew from there."
An advanced Alay Pigeon Shooting Association Instructor, Steve heads up a team which has grown from eight to more than 30-strong. They organise and deliver hundreds of events every year, catering for corporate team events and stag and hen parties as well as family groups and children’s parties.
But it’s the current economic uncertainty that, Steve says, has presented their biggest challenge to date.
“The biggest concern has been having to adapt to changing economic times including several recessions. Our main turnover is derived from corporate entertainment, and of course that is the first thing to be cut in times of recession.
‘Brexit has surely produced one of the most economic uncertain periods of our lifetime.’
“But Brexit is having a huge effect on a lot of our biggest clients, particularly those involved in the motor industry and it's having a massive impact on our corporate business turnover. Brexit has surely produced one of the most economic uncertain periods of our lifetime.
“I’m immensely proud to be able to celebrate our 30thanniversary next year but the next 30 years for Adventure Sports will undoubtedly involve responding quickly and effectively to the ever-changing demands of the market.”
