£8.5 million finance package from HSBC UK puts Bristol-based Shiner in the global spotlight
A major lifestyle and sports distributor, headquartered in Bristol, has secured a £8.5 million finance package from HSBC UK, allowing it to grow internationally.
Shiner, established in Bristol 85 years ago, is a third-generation family business that manufactures and distributes lifestyle goods and action sports equipment, including apparel, roller skates, skateboards and protective gear. HSBC provided funding to Shiner’s Dutch based subsidiary directly from HSBC UK, successfully implementing one of the first facilities of its kind and setting the business up for the future.
Shiner recently expanded into the US and Europe, with offices and warehouses in California and the Netherlands. In the next few years, the business hopes to expand even further globally, in partnership with HSBC UK.
Charlie Allen, Managing Director at Shiner, said: “This is a hugely exciting time for Shiner, as we doubled our turnover in the last 18 months and we have expanded globally. The funding package we received from HSBC UK will help us grow into the European market post-Brexit, as we expand our European distribution base while remaining committed to our UK customers.
“Action sports are becoming more popular than ever, with a significant increase in people participating in skateboarding across the globe since the pandemic began and great exposure through the Olympics. It’s a great time for us to expand and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our HSBC UK relationship manager, David Skyrme, who ensured the process ran seamlessly.”
James Shepherd, Area Director for Bristol at HSBC UK, added: “Shiner is a perfect example of a great Bristol success story – a family business that has expanded into the US and Europe and plans to continue increasing its global reach. We’re delighted to be supporting the business in its next phase of growth and we can’t wait to continue seeing it flourish in these next few years.”
In addition to distributing international brands, Shiner also has its own branded products, such as skateboards, scooters and roller skates, all designed in the UK from its Bristol Headquarters.
