Vodafone's agreement with Oracle could see holographic calls hit the market sooner

Oracle will help Vodafone regulate traffic on its 5G network which means we could see holographic calls sooner.

Vodafone has selected Oracle Communications to help it manage traffic on its new standalone 5G network.

Reading-based Oracle will work with the telephone giant on network policy using its cloud native network policy management solution which will enable the Newbury-headquartered firm to to make more intelligent data decisions and quickly test and deploy new services.

Oracle say the solution, which dynamically prioritises network traffic based on demand, will help Vodafone get new products such as holographic calls to market faster.

Andrea Dona, chief network officer of Vodafone UK, said: “Moving to ‘cloud native’ is a culture shift as much as it is a technology shift for a techcomms company like Vodafone.

“Our partners must demonstrate flexibility and agility, as well as aligning to our vision of how technology will augment and support tomorrow’s digital society.”

Networks across the globe are upgrading their internal infrastructure so that they can scale up and manage the growth in 5G services.

Andrew Morawski, senior vice president and general manager, Oracle Communications, Networks, said: “5G undoubtedly opens the door for endless new ways to engage with our world, but intelligent policy management is the entryway to capitalise on these opportunities,” said “Our 5G and cloud capabilities are helping Vodafone to build a future-proof network that is automated, easier to scale, simpler to operate, and more cost-effective.”
