Green light for Dunkerton’s No.131 terrace development in Cheltenham

Cheltenham Borough Council has given its approval to plans for a permanent outdoor terrace structure at No.131 hotel in the town centre.
The venue is owned by Julian Dunkerton, co-founder of Superdry – who, together with wife Jade, have invested over £50 million into the local economy.
The marquees currently outside were erected in 2020 to accommodate social distancing.
But the council had previously refused to let them stay permanently beyond the pandemic, with some saying they afforded No.131 an unfair commercial advantage.
More than 2,000 people have since signed a petition in favour of the proposed development, and more than 80 per cent of comments on the council’s website expressed approval.
“It’s a great day for Cheltenham,” said Julian.
“I’m absolutely delighted that the council has backed our vision for No.131.
“This decision ensures we can continue to offer a world-class hospitality experience, attracting visitors from across the UK and beyond while securing jobs and boosting the local economy.
“The approved design for the terrace features a slim, unobtrusive metal pergola with a retractable roof, aiming to complement the Regency architecture of the area.
“It will be an asset to all, from those enjoying Cheltenham’s vibrant hospitality scene to guests attending the Cheltenham Races, The Festival and other major events.
“This enhancement will provide a high-quality, year-round space that strengthens the town’s reputation as a premier destination.”
