Cheltenham Borough Homes (CBH) has received £2 million as part of a consortium bid led by Stroud District Council, which it will use to improve the energy efficiency of a further 187 homes.

This comes in support of Cheltenham Borough Council’s ambition to reach Net Zero by 2030, and follows the previous wave of funding which raised £800,000 to address an initial 59 homes with an EPC rating of D or below.

The investment was provided by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, previously operating as the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. It will help CBH to pass the rewards of energy efficiency down to customers, who are set to benefit from lower bills and warmer homes.

Cheltenham Councillor Alisha Lewis, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, said: “With rising energy costs putting a strain on households and making it harder to heat homes, this investment in our communities is vital.

“This decarbonisation project will help us reduce the consumption of energy and carbon emissions, which protects our planet and our residents against the harsh impact of rising energy prices.

“Transforming homes so that they are fit for the future is an incredibly important part of our journey to Net Zero. This will also support the local economy, providing more jobs within the trades sector, so together we can all do our bit to look after our environment.”

The initial wave of funding allowed CBH to explore what could be achieved through retrofitting. It is now evaluating options for the remaining 4,500 homes which it manages as part of a Carbon Reduction plan in conjunction with the council.

CBH will soon provide Cheltenham Borough Council’s first nine new build affordable Net Zero carbon homes. Work is set to begin at the brownfield site on Swindon Road this autumn, and the £180 million project includes the installation of solar panels and external communal gardens to promote biodiversity.
