Worcester Warriors Managing Director steps down

A former Worcester Warriors director of rugby, Steve Diamond, is leading a consortium seeking to take over the club, which went into administration last month, it is being reported.

Speaking publicly, Steve said: "My goal is a sustainable business able to compete back in the Premiership within three or four years," he said. Sixways Village is what we will call the business if we're successful."

Steve says he has financial backing from unnamed investors, and will have former Leicester chief executive Simon Cohen as part of the consortium.

Worcester Rugby Football Club dates back to 1871 and it was more than 100 years later, in 1975, they moved to their current home at Sixways Stadium close to the M5.

Due to extensive support from club backer local man Cecil Duckworth, the founder of Worcester Bosch, the club built a strong team, with promotions following. In 2006, ambitious plans were announced for a £23 million development programme, which would see a health club with fitness centre and swimming pool, fully tarmacked park and ride area, and expanded capacity to 11,499.

In August 2022, two years after the death of Mr Duckworth, the club was served with a winding-up petition for unpaid tax by HM Revenue and Customs.

Steve added: “My goal is to create a sustainable business that is able to compete in the Premiership within the next three or four years, and allows professional rugby to thrive in Worcester.

“It took us a month to put the plan together and we presented it last week to the RFU and the PRL (Premiership Rugby).

“Now a decision needs to be made and hopefully that decision is for the right organisation to put Worcester Warriors back on the map.”
