The company behind WindWings – sails which leverage wind power rather than polluting fuel to propel large cargo ships – has signed up a new manufacturer in Hong Kong.

Portsmouth’s BAR Technologies inked an agreement with CM Energy Tech Co. (CMET) to begin production of its 20m and 24m WindWings, launched last September.

The new smaller models, designed specifically for mid-sized vessels, are projected to provide up to 0.7 tonnes of fuel savings per sail per day on global shipping routes.

John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, said the industry’s response to WindWings has exceeded expectations.

“One of the biggest shifts we’ve seen is that stakeholders now trust the physics behind our three-element wing design,” said John.

“By formalising our partnership with CMET, we’re ensuring that shipowners have access to scalable wind propulsion technology that’s both commercially and operationally viable.

“The interest we’ve seen from the market reflects a clear demand for proven solutions that reduce fuel consumption and emissions in a cost-effective manner.”

Huafeng Zhan, executive president of CMET, added: “The demand for WindWings highlights the urgent need for sustainable, efficient solutions in shipping.

“CMET is proud to partner with BAR Technologies in expanding marketing and production, bringing this innovative technology to a broader segment of the market.

“This collaboration strengthens our shared commitment to maritime decarbonisation and delivering practical solutions for shipowners navigating new regulatory pressures.”

The news comes as shipping businesses continue to make key fleet decisions in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s 2030 targets for decarbonisation – making WindWings an increasingly attractive option.
