Malvern-headquartered Speller Metcalfe has today released their 12-month accounts for the period up to March 2022, confirming a solid period of trading for the regional contractor during a time of instability for the industry.

The figures demonstrate a slight increase in profit before tax to £554,000, compared with figures released for 2020 – 2021.

Turnover remained stable at £104.2 million.

James Speller, managing director at Speller Metcalfe, said: “This year’s accounts highlight a solid year of turnover and profit for the business, which reflects our strategy of sustainability in what has been a year of significant cost increases for the industry.

“While this has created challenges, we have continued to invest in our services and our people, building upon a business culture that sets Speller Metcalfe apart as a leading regional contractor, and one that continues to attract some of the industry’s best talent.”

Investment at the firm comes in the form of technology and staff training, with the contractor in the process of creating their own e-learning platform and using the latest drone technology in-house to support site logistics, topographical surveys, roof inspections and material management plans.

Speller Metcalfe has also continued to focus on retaining clients who have a strong pipeline of work - a strategy which has proved successful and includes placement on a number of frameworks – currently 24. This includes the likes of Procure23, Crown Commercial Services, DWP, Pagabo, Constructing West Midlands and SCF Residential.

They continue to deliver predominantly for the public sector, which has included many leisure, healthcare and housing commissions in 2022 such as the new £19.4 million Forest of Dean Community Hospital, the £13.8m Tarka Leisure Centre in Barnstaple and the £12.6m redevelopment of a site in Bristol into 74 homes for Yarlington Homes (contract values).

Moving into March 2023, the contractor has already secured 91% of their forecasted workload, which increases to 96% for schemes which are currently in PCSA agreements.

“Our goal for the next 12 months continues to be creating a sustainable business model which is aligned with our expertise,” James continues.

“But that doesn’t mean we will stagnate. Innovation has always been a key driver for Speller Metcalfe, which will ensure we can compete with the very best in construction and deliver strong results for our clients in the years ahead.”
