Newly formed Westminster group to promote united vision for the Great South West

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Great South West met on 29th July for the first time since the recent General Election, marking a significant step forward in championing the economic and investment potential of the region in the heart of Westminster and Whitehall.
The APPG for the Great South West serves as a vital platform for parliamentarians to collaborate with local councils, businesses, universities, and other stakeholders. Its mission is to drive investment, promote the region’s industries, and foster sustainable growth, aspiring to deliver up to £45 billion of economic benefit by 2035.
Newly appointed Chair, Steve Race MP and member for Exeter, led the inaugural meeting welcoming new MPs from across the South West and underlining the region’s collective commitment to driving forward key initiatives. Rebecca Smith, MP for South West Devon, Richard Forde, MP for Honiton & Sidmouth and Lord Teverson were appointed as Vice Chairs of the APPG.
The meeting was attended by a diverse group of MPs and Lords from all political parties and every part of the Great South West region from Somerset and Devon to Cornwall, Dorset and Bournemouth, reflecting the cross-party approach which the APPG will pursue. They were joined by Karl Tucker, Chair of the Great South West and Ahmed Goga, Director of the Great South West.
Steve Race MP, said: "The South West region is economically diverse and a major contributor to UK PLC. From manufacturing to scientific innovation, people across our counties are at the forefront of generating economic prosperity. However, we face unique challenges in transport resilience, cost of living, and low investment. Our job is to advocate for our people, businesses, and institutions so that our region can continue to grow sustainably in prosperity.”
Karl Tucker, Chair of the Great South West Partnership, added: "The reconstitution of the APPG comes at a pivotal time for the Great South West. With new MPs joining our efforts, we are better positioned than ever to champion the unique opportunities and address the challenges faced by our region. It’s fantastic to see our parliamentarians come together, to ensure our great region can deliver for the UK, and be a leader in the green and blue economies."
