Gloucestershire-based charity National Star has appointed Lynette Barrett as its new Chief Executive.

The charity, which supports young people with complex disabilities, chose Lynette following an extensive recruitment process involving a wide variety of stakeholders including representatives from staff, students and residents.

Lynette has worked for National Star for a number of years, most recently in a variety of senior leadership roles overseeing the operation of the charity’s services.

Paul Styles, Chair of Trustees at the charity, said: ‘The trustees decided that Lynette’s particular skills and experience make her an ideal person to lead the organisation.’

The appointment follows a new £6 million project started by the charity at Ullenwood. National Star is creating new accommodation tailored to fully meet the needs of the young people the charity supports and to provide stimulating spaces.

Lynette said: “National Star is passionate about shining a light on what young people with disabilities can achieve with the appropriate support and the incredible contribution they can make to society

“Working with National Star’s incredible multi-disciplinary team, I will give my all to champion these young people. There is an incredible unmet need for our support and that will be one of our challenges in the years ahead. It’s an honour to now take National Star forward and to build on our reputation and past achievements.”

Lynette will be charged with overseeing the charity’s annual turnover of £32 million along with its more than 1,100 staff. Alongside the residential and day college it runs in Cheltenham it also manages day colleges in Hereford and Mamhilad in Wales. It also runs long-term living facilities for adults with disabilities in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Hereford and Malvern.

To support a seamless changeover, current Chief Executive David Ellis will remain in the post for a short time, before stepping down to move into a coaching and mentoring role.
