Multinational drinks company Diageo has made a minority investment in The Oxford Artisan Distillery business through Distill Ventures, an independent drinks accelerator which builds and scales drinks brands of the future.

This investment allows the distillery to further develop and scale its grain crops whisky production, working with populations of heritage seeds and English farmers in a form of agriculture that sequesters significant amounts of carbon and rebuilds soil health.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery CEO, Dave Smith, said: “Over the last few years we have seen the industry take major steps towards addressing the climate crisis, but we have a responsibility to do more in tackling sustainable farming and grain production. With Diageo and Distill Ventures’ support, we believe we can use whisky to further a revolution in the field. We have been blown away by their belief in our mission and could not be happier to be entering the next stage of our journey with them alongside.”

Distill Ventures was born out of a realisation that many visionary drinks entrepreneurs had barriers holding them back and little access to resources to help them build global brands. Unlike industries like tech where this support already existed, Distill wanted to change that.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery is the only distillery in the world that uses ancient populations of heritage rye, wheat and barley, all sustainably grown on organic farms within a 50-mile radius of the distillery. The distillery also commissioned the design of its stills, collaborating with Paul Pridham and South Devon Railway Engineering, some of the last great historical industrial coppersmiths in England, famous for their refurbishment of the Flying Scotsman.
